Today is Dr. Seuss' birthday! What a treasury of creative books he left for us and our children and grandchildren to enjoy! Sydney's school celebrated his birthday by having parents come in and read favorite Dr. Seuss books to the class. Brett got to go in this morning and read "I Can Read with my Eyes Shut" to Sydney and 25 buddies. He wore my "Cat in the Hat" hat and necktie that I used for halloween last year. Pierce went with him for the adventure. I'm sure it was a treat for him and for the kids.
As for my reading, although I cannot yet read with my eyes shut, I have been making some progress! I have found that making a specific list of what books I want to read this year and actually getting those books on my bookshelf beforehand (well, some of them, at least) has made a huge difference in how many books I get through. I have completed six books in less than two months, so I am moving along much quicker than I thought I would. I guess it helps that it is winter and the evenings are well spent with a book in hand rather than being outside. I read five of the books on my list plus one other I stumbled upon. I'm thinking of reviewing them for you in case anyone is interested in reading one or two of them. So far, I've read exclusively non-fiction...I think I'm ready for a little fiction break!
I've read:
Kisses from Katie (excellent, inspiring and eye-opening account of Christian service. She was raised Catholic, and could certainly be on her way to sainthood!)
The Money Saving Mom's Budget (good, simple, clear advice on how to save money, but not a lot of new information for me)
Twelve Extraordinary Women (not my favorite! I'll explain if I get around to reviewing it! Hint: it was written by a very strongly anti-Catholic and clearly misinformed man.)
The Handbook for Catholic Moms (well-written, encompassing a broad range of subjects, helpful for young moms)
Real Food on a Real Budget (good, but certainly not written for the average consumer; geared towards readers already committed to a whole foods diet; self-published, so plenty of annoying grammatical errors)
Organized Simplicity (not on my original list, but I was able to download it for free, so I gave it a try on my Kindle; very well-written, informative; practical advice for how to simplify and declutter your life and why you should do so. A surprisingly excellent read.)
Four of these books I actually purchased because they were not available at my library. However, Kisses from Katie and Money Saving Mom's Budget both donate 100% of their proceeds to charity, so I felt good about those purchases. Thankfully my least favorite of the bunch was a library book (12 Extraordinary Women).
Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!
